If you are a role-player or have role-played, are interested in role-playing (note the deliberate repetition here), and haven't received an e-mail regarding it today, then you may need to send me an e-mail soon and ask me what the hell I'm wittering about!

Or say you're interested and you'd like to know more - either works!

Eek, only two days until I run...

I'm semi-ready, well I'm more than that for I have been running three or four times a week for a few weeks now (even whilst on holiday in England when there was Lego Star Wars to be played)!

I haven't got as much sponsorship as I'd hoped but I am hoping for a surge in the last couple of days...

Mark runs for Cancer Research

I have been browsing the new(ish) website for speculative fiction stuff today and it is rather swish indeed! Very well set out and looks very smooth, a wealth of information on there (and even some of my interviews with the stars of speculative fiction)!

You need to go check it out:

A Boy Goes on a Journey

I wanted to do a bit of a review of The Doctor's Daughter' but [info]mondyboy got in before me and said everything for me:

The Doctor's Daughter review

There is Supernatural stuff over at [info]tv_casebook though and there will be Blake's 7 love later on...

Get back to work!

Last night I offered to become a mentor for a rather talented young lady, who submitted something to Voices. Her story was rejected but it was very easy to see genuine writing ability and the fact that she is only 17 makes that shine through even more. (I won't name her here as she might not want the world to know that I'm helping her out, it is a bit dangerous for her future career after all...)

The young writer in question was frustrated about markets and asked if I had any tips about them. Ralan is a very obvious one, although I really love Duotrope and think their whole approach to submissions and markets is exceptional. They have been a big help to Morrigan Books and Gilgamesh Press and if you haven't got on board do it now.

I have also decided to contact one more author regarding my collection, Nex, and this is a writer that Morrigan Books has been taking a very keen interest in. I've not had a response yet but I'm really hoping she agrees as I am a huge fan of her writing and think that she would make a perfect addition to what is already a very exciting book!

EDIT: I can now reveal that Carole Johnstone has agreed to work with me on Nex, (as hinted at above)! I am so excited about this and my motivation to get this done now knows no bounds!

Exciting Poll!

Okay maybe not that exciting but I made you look didn't I? *giggles*

I saw an ad for a mountain bike yesterday, from $670 (USD) down to $415 (USD) at a shop in town. Now I have a mountain bike that I use for daily cycling, which is a bit worse for wear and which I wouldn't trust to get me around a forest any more at all. I also have a racing bike (pictured above), which has a broken back wheel that I have to fix before I go out on it again. I will be fixing the wheel in any case, it's just which do I do first?

I love my racer but I also love the flexibility of being able to choose my courses, being as the mountain bike is good for forests and the racer good for roads...

And so:

While I'm waiting for Deborah Biancotti to paint her nails, I can post a couple of things on ScribeFire, thank you [info]doctodd for this - I'm still not sure of it as I couldn't get it to work on Blogger but it seems to be doing the job here!

Welcome to [info]his_night_sky, [info]boku_no_migite and [info]salamet, I may need to do another poll soon with the influx of new and exciting people to bother... stalk... chat to!

Got hold of the Cloverfield DVD yesterday after [info]petekempshall told me he was getting ready to watch the alternative endings and Ihave to say I was mightily disappointed with them (no spoilers, promise). I mean did anything different happen? No answers please. *chuckles*

Was a bit impressed with the last two Doctor Who episodes though, what happened? It got good...

Should be watching Supernatural at lunchtime and then meself and wedschilde are going to have a chat about it - maybe I should start using my [info]tv_casebook community again, dissecting my favourite tv, what do the newbies (and oldbies think)?

Oh and this 'The Stars of Speculative Fiction' series I've doing, please contact me if you'd like to be involved as I e-mailed a group of people about it when I had the idea and my flist has somewhat increased in size since then. There are some slots as early as July, and then we move into autumn. I'd like to run this right up until December if I get the names, as it's been fun and I get the impression quite a few of you have enjoyed them.

Portishead is indeed the bomb now and I've been playing it at least five times a day - it will be there or thereabouts come the revolution December. Those who have Last.fm, may have noticed this.

I have my Vox thing back up and running if anyone is on there and for the newbies I have zee old Facebook account, and Morrigan Books and Gilgamesh Press have Yahoo! Groups for news and info.

What you waiting for, get off and check them out, add me, sign up...

Firefox, Firefox, Firefox, stop spell checking 'afeared', for it is one of my all time favourite words ever and it saddens me that you feel the need to put yer red line under it every time I use it.

If you hear the line 'carrot of the river' it's probably just 'current of the river' sung badly, or?

So stop singing 'carrot of the river' you fool!

I hope you are all having fun so far and hope there is more fun to come!

The Portishead album is really growing and that song, Nylon Smile, is just getting better with every listen. I was having problems with the end of the album but that seems to be coming together and at this moment in time it stands at album of the year. As you know that is a roller coaster of selections and there will be many changes before 31st December.

The villains responsible for making the hotel where Voices is based the most disturbing yet have been revealed:

Voices line-up announced

I'm jolly excited about that one, and have been warmed to hear that most of those rejected in the second stage are curious to know when the book is being released as they want a copy, due to their interest in the concept.

I'm feeling bright and shiny today, the book is going well, Morrigan Books is going well on all fronts and is getting some notice early on, amazing the impact when you think it became an official company less than five months ago!

Should be off for a run with the wife later (in the glaring sun). I'll let you know how that goes...

I remember that well over a year ago I tipped some on my flist to check out others on my flist that they may not have read before and who I think they might have something in common with.

It's like having a party and people getting on with each other just as you knew they would...

Okay part one is off the top of my head, as I'm tired now and just off to watch something. I will think more and add to this soon.

Stave the first:

[info]tammy_moore you really need to be speaking to [info]amandapillar - you two are so alike it's scary and you freak me out with the things you keep telling me that sound like you've had a chat with each other before me (maybe you have...) One is my multi-talented author at Morrigan and the other my multi-talented editor at Morrigan, how can it go wrong?

[info]wild_heart and [info]fixnwrtr need to have a chat, as you two always have very honest and blunt posts and you're both very good at bringing me down to earth too!

[info]dragon_crier and [info]xjenavivex, both up and coming writers. I've just seen [info]dragon_crier's writing and was much impressed from one so young! [info]xjenavivex is such a supporter of writers on LJ and anyone writing wants to be checking her LJ out and of course her new community soon!

[info]joelasutherland and [info]southernweirdo both writers of rather decent spec fic and who I am sure know each other anyway - don't you?

[info]nyssa_p (welcome to my LJ Nyssa) and [info]calendula_witch who have both been having a chat on their LJs about the trials and tribulations of writing.

[info]leopardess, [info]athenais and [info]onemoreshadow - rather talented photographers and jolly nice people to boot (not that the others aren't - oops here goes) Oh and [info]athenais loves Finland and [info]leopardess is Finnish, amazing eh!

[info]morbidmusings and [info]wedschilde - you're both so lovely and brutal and I have crushes on you both! (oops did I say that out loud?)

[info]stephcampisi and [info]amandapillar - for you'll be working together soon *winks* and I have a crush on you two too...

[info]dedbutdrmng and [info]jadeweasal - you're both very funny, you are, no honest I mean it!

Right my eyes hurt, time to go, I will return...

If you are curious about the best song of the moment then look no further than:

as it is unbelievably gorgeous and matches anything they have ever done before (yes and I have heard Sour Times and Wandering Star)

(I may have some linkage on that soon)

Well, actually the Voices thing was rather fun (in a tough way) and can be found over here:

Morrigan Books

The tax thing wasn't as much fun and all sorts of things went wrong in my attempt to get the damn thing in before the 23:59 deadline last night.

I did and at the end my wife laughed at the amount of effort to put in just to inform the tax office that I owed them no money and that they didn't owe me anything, due to my being several thousand kronor in the red.

I have been working on the photos from the trip a little and hopefully tonight or tomorrow may find some time to pop them on here - I know you're all desperate to see my wildly grinning features but patience, patience...

I feel like I can sit and chill now when I can do anything but - I have some contracts to draw up, some discussions on Voices, some e-mails of rejection or acceptance to write and then some serious chats with [info]amandapillar about what the writers need to do on their stories to make sure they work in the way we want, etc.

I'm on my way back though, in a lot of ways!

Remember me?

I'm not really here and especially not if you talk to [info]amandapillar...

Blimey, go away for a week and lose internet capabilities and the whole world falls apart - we had 72 submissions for Voices before I left and 105 when I got back!

Amanda was great and has taken up most of the slack, and while I'm typing this I should be finishing reading some of the submissions and commenting on them for her.

I had an acceptance of my own this week as after a couple of rejections, my witch poem, Maleficus, (remember that [info]integritysinger for it is how we met?) finally got a home at Doorways Magazine. I'm very happy about this for two reasons: it's my first poem to be published and I have always had a soft spot for it, in terms of theme and style.

England was fun, missed out on [info]mylefteye but met up with with Gary McMahon, who is even nicer in person (or at least that's what I told him)!

Right back to the grind, although I hope to have more news (and a couple of pics) soon!

A rare treat today as we get a little insight into what the legendary Kaaron Warren, former egg-packer turned Ditmar and Aurealis winner extraordinaire, gets up to on a Tuesday (a little after ten).

Although there is no mention of egg-packing in her stories (as yet), she does expound a little on her delusions of grandeur and how she once saved a dying star by reading it one of her stories...

Yes, she's a kook, but she's a loveable kook - I give you, the one, the only Kaaron (cause she mispells it) Warren:

How do I keep up?

Tomorrow afternoon I fly off to Blighty, armed with a couple of books (I'll be picking up a few there), my trusty laptop (which isn't so trusty) and getting ready for my best friend's 40th birthday celebrations!

Got an e-mail this morning, and this makes the fourth of its kind:

Dear Mr. Deniz,

I know you have a scheduled release date for T. A. Moore's 'The Even' at this year's FantasyCon but I was wondering if you had any facility for pre-order as I really want the book and would like to guarantee a copy.

Cheers,

(no, it wasn't the Irish guy before you ask)

Hold your horses woman, I've got to finish editing, typesetting and putting a price on it!

Cool eh?

And so surely it would be remiss of me to go the day without announcing new books in the Morrigan Books' publishing schedule:

Morrigan Books announces two new books

Cool eh?

It's also St. George's Day and a day I never really took a lot of notice of until I moved away from blighty, funny that...

There is a lot of music going on just at the mo (much will be revealed later) and part of that is due to reading High Fidelity. I have seen the film about 8 times (well of course I have for I am in it) but never resd the book and it got me thinking of my top five recording artists just now. I think I would have to say:

  • The God Machine
  • Eels
  • Tom Waits
  • Kristin Hersh
  • Pink Floyd
For my 30th Birthday party (8 years ago) it looked like this:

  • The Smashing Pumpkins
  • Eels
  • Tom Waits
  • Tori Amos
  • Pink Floyd
Hmm, I wonder how it will look for the big 40th party coming up?

  • I am much stronger than a lot of people think.
  • I am much stronger than I think.
  • Fiona Apple really needs me to put my headphones on from time to time (I know cause she said so)
  • Some people have only just found out I am a veggie (or rabbit - take your pick)
  • Some people have only just found out what great taste I have in music (where the hell have you been?)
  • I'm already 7,000 words into Nex (that includes Corvus, 1,500, Arcticus, 2,000 and, as yet, untitled 3, 500) Not bad eh?
  • I forgot to post this and now I'm off to bed

Today I get to have a relaxed chat with my old university chum, Simon Guerrier, former cheese stall owner (down Camden way) and expert rat catcher.

Simon was beaten up in Northern England upon his arrival for being a Southern ponce and gained the nickname 'wanker man' from two rather strange girls in our university group (my name was 'terrorist man') but he's put all that behind him now and has just finished his three year run on London's musical circuit in the crowd-puller 'Sweeney Todd' (he played one of the pies).

Anyway, I give you Mr. Simon Guerrier!
